I’m always on the look-out for amazing coffee and delicious food around Melbourne and in comes CH James, a super chic addition to Station Street, Fairfield! Open for brunch and lunch seven days a week, the menu comes from the talented mind of Frenchman Franck Verschaeve (ex-chef at Melbourne institution Pope Joan) and features Small Batch coffee lovingly made by barista Yuta Tanaka.
Featuring an amazing outdoor courtyard with a gorgeous vegie garden, CH James is modern but features a nod to yesteryear with its compelling story of local Charles Henry James who was prominent in the northern suburbs in the halcyon period of Melbourne’s development in the 1870 and 1880s as a fiercely local champion of community and hospitality.
“CH James is a place where locals can come to catch up in an attractive space and enjoy convivial dining. There’s some communal seating but also plenty of small tables and a stunning outdoor area that is unique in Melbourne’s north,” says owner Theo Krambias.
“We also have a passion to provide patrons with fresh, innovative and great quality products,” says Theo. “Our suppliers include some of Melbourne’s such as Melbourne City Rooftop Honey, Small Batch coffee, Ocean Made Seafood, Amore cheeses, EDS Breads, Villa Verde Free Range Eggs, Dr Marty Crumpets, and Flavours Fruit and Veg. The edible courtyard garden is maintained by Leaf, Root and Fruit Gardening Services.”
My picks of the menu? I had a delicious house brewed Iced Tea to accompany my Chickpea Stew with Chard, Roasted Pumpkin, Almonds and Cumin Labna. My gorgeous dining companion had the Cod Croquette with Gribiche, Salad and Crispy Salad and couldn’t stop raving about it.
My summary? Fresh, innovative food that will please even the most passionate Locavore, set amongst chic surrounds in bustling Fairfield. Definitely worth a visit!
