Hello Sailor cafe in Hawthorn

I was first drawn to Hello Sailor by it’s big glass frontage, breadbaskets in the window, and birch tones. Oh, and it’s bluebird of happiness tattoo inspired logo.

Despite its relatively confined size, Hello Sailor is a bright, airy and welcoming. But it can be a squeeze, so make sure you get in early or wait until the peak is over. That said, Hello Sailor has recently ‘expanded’ with street-side tables and umbrellas taking better advantage of its location on the corner of Auburn Rd and Victoria Rd.

One of the best things about Hello Sailor coffee – supplied by Seven Seeds – is that you can practically drown in the large, and sometimes that’s exactly what the doctor ordered! Per usual, I opt for a skinny mocha. Made with Mörk, it has a slightly bitter note to the chocolate, which complements the coffee well.

Everything that comes out of the kitchen looks delectable, but this morning I opt for the crumpet stack with fresh fruit and honey, sans cream for me I’m afraid. The tastes are refreshing, and it’s not a heavy start to the day, rather leaving you comfortably full. The fresh herbs add a light accent to the fresh berries, banana and honey. If you’re looking for something that’s a bit more than toast but without being a plate of fried stuffs, this might well be your most satisfying option.

One of the high points about eating at Hello Sailor is the staff. They’re attentive and friendly, and clearly invested in the quality of coffee, food and service you receive, which can be refreshing.
