Collins Street was alive on Thursday night, with The Sound of Music opening in Melbourne. Despite the weather being a little miserable, the red carpet was buzzing with anticipation and joy ahead of the first showing of the lavish and critically acclaimed production.
Following its record-breaking run at the London Palladium, The Sound of Music opened in grand style at Melbourne’s majestic Regent Theatre. Admittedly it’s the first time I’ve experienced the uplifting true story of the von Trapp family and the journey welcoming their kind and enchanting governess, Maria… Gasp! I know! I’m not sure if I’ve been living under a rock, but I think it was meant to be, as this musical has opened my eyes to the magical world that is The Sound of Music, and I’m so pleased that I got to experience it live, in full glory here in our beautiful city.
The production stars many of Australia’s favourite stage performers including Cameron Daddo (Captain von Trapp), Marina Prior (Baroness Schraeder) and Amy Lehpamer (Maria).
It brims over with some of the most memorable songs, my favourites performed on Thursday night included Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and of course the captivating title song The Sound of Music.
The show is the perfect excuse for a night out with the girls or as a special family treat. I headed along with my friend Claire, taking advantage of some pre-show dinner and drinks at Three Below Bar, which is just around the corner from the Theatre. We also enjoyed a cocktail while we watched the show and sung along to the catchy lyrics.
My favourite moment in the production? Without a doubt when the nuns sung through the aisles… Their voices were uplifting and it took me a moment or two to catch my breathe after the act. I won’t share any more, because no body likes a spoiler! You’ll just have to head along and see it for yourself (and let me know below if you do, so I can hear your favourite memories).
The Sound of Music is playing at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre for a strictly limited season.
