Strictly Ballroom the Musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne on Saturday evening and I was thrilled to be in the audience to watch the premiere.
Baz Luhrmann’s dazzling new musical will have you smiling and laughing until your jaw hurts and clapping so hard, your hands will burn. It was the perfect blend of professional production and down-to-earth, good family entertainment.
You’ve probably all seen the film, but to freshen your memory – Strictly Ballroom the Musical is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. This uplifting and courageous tale originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann devised with a group of students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) back in 1984.
The show is big, bright, joyous and laugh-out loud fun and features classic songs from the film including Love is in the Air, Time After Time and Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps plus some wonderful new songs from Aussie artists such as Eddie Perfect and Sia.
I headed along to the official Media Call last Thursday, where I had the opportunity to take the photos for this post. Let me tell you, the set and costumes are amazing, the music addictive and the story refreshingly and heart-warming Australian.
Director, Baz Luhrmann and Academy Award winning designer, Catherine Martin were both in attendance and it was a privilege to hear their warm praises for the cast and talk about the shows journey to our beautiful city. The husband and wife duo said they were excited to open the musical in Melbourne, where the pair met more than 20 years ago.
Her Majesty’s Theatre comes to life and sparkles, sparkles, sparkles; dressed in bright, vintage style posters and flashy, film star lighting.
Strictly Ballroom the Musical has bogo pogo’ed its way onto the Melbourne stage after a 7-month run at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre.
The production was created here by an Australian team including creative team and producers Global Creatures, with Australian cast and crew.
If you’re a musical lover and love a night on the town in Melbourne, then this should spring to the top of your list.
Tickets for the production are available to book now.
