A couple of little gems have opened up recently in the leafy East and they’re certainly gonna give some of the big name Cafes a run for their money! I’m talking about Mr Hendricks, Mister + Miss, and Holla.
New cafes in Melbourne’s Eastside… In no particular order let’s start with Mr Hendricks, a really minimal yet modern cafe right in Balwyn.
This place is always buzzing with people but don’t be fooled by its tiny front diner, Mr Hendricks has a huge newly designed courtyard out the back – I know what you’re probably thinking; ‘its the middle of bloody winter in Melbourne, I’m not sitting outside!’, trust me I thought the same thing, but don’t worry!
Those guys at Mr Hendricks have got that sorted with about a million and one outdoor heaters annnddddd plenty of blankets to go round – genius! Besides their incredibly monochromatic and Instagram friendly interior design, the menu is super foodie-photo-friendly too; porridges sprinkled with flower petals, pasties with texture for days, you really have to add this place to your list of places to try!
I suggest during the week as sometimes there’s a slight wait on the weekend, but well worth it!
Next up, Mister + Miss which is about a 5-10 minute drive from Mr Hendricks on Whitehorse Road.
Mister + Miss may not look like much from the street but once you get in side it’s interior is sleek concrete, moody grey hues and a huge floor space. The menu is full of the usual ‘old faithfuls’ but the serving sizes are B-I-G and surprisingly still really well priced.
This is a great go-to place for a Sunday morning hang over feed because you know you won’t be leaving hungry.
The newest of the bunch is Holla on Victoria Street, which is actually owned by the two guys who run Prospect Espresso (Camberwell) and Townhouse (Toorak) so you know already it’s going to be good.
I know Victoria Street is traditionally known for Asian cuisine which makes Holla the perfect little addition for people who live locally but want to open their taste bud horizons. If you’re a keen steak fan Holla is the place for you.
The atmosphere is really chill, the crowd is young and the best part is it’s open late for a cheeky wine before you hit up Chapel Street.
