This month Melbourne Girl was treated to one of the city’s juiciest culinary experiences… Meatworksco. One of the newer kids on the South Melbourne block, Meatworksco is a smokehouse bar and grill serving up succulent lunch options, delicious brunch dishes and most recently, dinner so fine you’ll want to channel your inner Lady Gaga and wrap yourself in it.
The flavours of the menu are inspired by smoking methods from around the globe and the menu boasts something for the meat eaters, seafood lovers and veggie warriors amongst us.
Betsy, the 450kg on site smoker, has her work cut out for her in this kitchen and it’s the platters she produces that are a crowd favourite. Before feasting on the Red Meat Platter (think pulled brisket, beef ribs, smokey pork ribs and sticky lamb ribs) we kicked off our dining experience with the polenta chips and garlic aioli perfectly offset with a glass of the house sauvignon blanc.
Things hotted up quickly and the table was laden with the Mix Platter (we’re talking perfectly cooked mussels, juicy prawns, torn pork shoulder and spicy chicken balls), crusty jacket potatoes with a dollop of butter and Asian greens.
There were no complaints when platters needed to be shuffled around to allow for the roasted corn with Parmesan and chipotle mayo, pickled carrot and cucumber salad and of course a selection of house made sauces, chilis and chutneys.
Whilst devouring the menu, we took in the beauty of our surrounds and marvelled at how a converted warehouse could be so damn cosy. The brainchild of Lindsay Jones-Evans, Meatworksco is a dining space that engages all of the senses and transports you to a land far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
From the gorgeous soft lighting, to the tin dinner plates and matching cups, the steel framed kitchen windows to the suspended plants, no detail has been spared and this little dining hot spot can only be described as out of this world.
The canteen style eatery has two large conjoined dining spaces and a smaller room in the front corner; perfect for a special birthday, work Christmas lunch or friendly get together.
Treat yourself to dinner at Meatworksco and enjoy a newfound appreciation for good old-fashioned food and hospitality.
