There’s nothing better than jumping in the car for an ocean escape. We love a great road trip and only 45 minutes south of Melbourne, you can experience some pure magic in Port Phillip Bay. Read on for my Mornington Peninsula Travel Guide to Safety Beach.
Safety Beach is perfected positioned between between the coastal suburbs of Mount Martha and Dromana. Taking it’s name from the calm and shallow waters of Dromana Bay, it’s an ideal spot for families and children, with views to the peak of Mount Martha in the north and to Arthurs Seat in the south (these views are best experienced from the jetty).
The Beach also plays home to some of the Peninsula’s prettiest coloured bathing boxes, creating a colourful backdrop to afternoon swims and lazy beach sessions, all summer long.
On the weekend my family and I visited Safety Beach, enjoying splashing in the shallow waters of the bay, whilst watching boats, seagulls and local walkers, who were also taking full advantage of the blissful sunshine.
As an added treat, the beach was lined with pathways of thousands of white and pink shells, which had unusually washed up in bulk numbers along the shoreline.
Despite it now being autumn, and the water a little chilly, the beach is still the most serene place to escape to. It’s where I best resonate with one of my favourite quotes (for obvious reasons)…
“For her the ocean was more than a dream, it was a place she needed to visit to find herself. And when she returned to the city, you could see the sun in her eyes, the wind in her hair, and the taste of the infinite salt on her lips” ~ Jose Chaves
6 best things to do at Safety Beach

Safety Beach is a safe and clean beach with glistening, turquoise waters. It’s a great swimming spots for the children, as well as adults, because there are no rocks and rarely any algae washing near the shore. The water is nearly always crystal clear, all year round.
I recommend you utilise the car parking areas available along Marine Pde, however there are also designated parking bays dotted along the main road which you can use during busier times (it get’s really busy over the Christmas holiday period).
There are also public toilets and cafes nearby, so you can enjoy a coffee (or two) nearby after getting your ocean fix. Be sure to check out our other Mornington Peninsula travel guides for tips on what to do, where to relax and the best breakfasts spots on the Peninsula here.
